Overheating in stock XS650b (not lean)

Thank you retired gentleman. Oil level is cool. Oil pump is also cool. I'll focus on the ignition for now. The charging system was just replaced with a Sparx system. I plan on learning everything I can in due time but right now there's a bit of a learning curve and my 650 is definitely not...

Overheating in stock XS650b (not lean)

This may be a dumb question but how do I know if it's actually overheating? "Feels hot" is pretty relative.. and I'm using my 350 as a reference.. which only really goes on short trips.

Overheating in stock XS650b (not lean)

I only started riding the 650 regularly about 1.5 months ago. I've always had to fiddle with the idle and mixture screws. One minute I think I got it just right then it'll die at a red light.. or the sputtering will start up again. I suspected the pilot jets because the bike idled well with a...

Overheating in stock XS650b (not lean)

After a long ride I get sputtering during 1st/2nd gear acceleration and the engine feels very hot. On the open road it runs fine. At idle the left side runs real nice but the right side runs uneven. Here are the plugs: The one with the dark threads is from the left (the running well...

    Broken gas cap hinge (1975)

It was an original, used tank. There was enough of the hinge left that the cap stayed on when closed (it would just come off completely when refueling). I ended up just returning it and buying a whole new tank with an intact hinge. Still hunting for a replacement cap... Thanks for all the...

Attaching sidestand spring - missing part? (1975)

Tried to weld on a washer to the nub but it wouldn't hold. Then just added a huge glob of weld and it did the trick. Thank you to my pal Fred for the assistance. The spring I attached was from MikesXS and it was the perfect length.. went on w/o any trouble.

    Brake light/high beam wiring issues

Turns out everything was caused by bad wiring in the headlamp. Took a couple hours to sort out (not by me!).

    Brake light/high beam wiring issues

The wiring isn't completely stock because there's a blade 10 amp fuse.. but yeah, I'm going to avoid the LED bulbs regardless. I wasn't suggesting that the headlight and brake lamp were connected.. just 2 separate issues. I was suggesting that the brake lamp and horn were connected. But if...

    Broken gas cap hinge (1975)

    Broken gas cap hinge (1975)

My new tank just showed up with the gas cap hinge busted off. Not sure about other years but with the 75's it's welded right onto the tank. Is it worth trying to restore? If so please share any tips, tricks, horror stories, etc.

    Brake light/high beam wiring issues

Update... I switched to a regular, non-LED, brake lamp bulb and got completely different symptoms. Brake lamp (regular bulb) Key on, lights off: no light, neither brake has any effect. Key on, lights ON: one filiment lit, neither brake has any effect. Brake lamp problem indicator...

    Brake light/high beam wiring issues

Got a 1975 XS650b with some wiring issues. I figure there's a mix-up somewhere and I'll need to trace the wires but wanted to ask to see if it could be more complicated. I can post some pictures tomorrow. Brake lamp (LED bulb) Key on, lights off: glows dim (3 diodes lit), when either...

I'll check the spring length. Thanks!!

Attaching sidestand spring - missing part? (1975)

The nub... that's what I was afraid of. The 70 - 73 diagram looks just like mine except that my nub is busted off. Welding time...

Attaching sidestand spring - missing part? (1975)

I have a 1975 XS650b that is missing a sidestand spring. I got an OEM spring but can't see where to attach the top of it. Do I need a link plate? If so does anyone know where to pick one up? MikesXS only has them for 1977-84. Thanks!...
