    That elusive weak spark

Fast forward to today: Once, I set the timing with a timing light, the bike still ran terribly. Decided to adjust cam chain tension, valve clearance, and finally sync carbs (thanks pamcopete). All went well and the bike still ran rough. Then I cleaned the carbs twice more (finally achieved...

    That elusive weak spark

Finally installed everything. The old jalopy fired right-up! The Pamco system is a dream come true! Just need to fine tune the timing with a timing light (for now I statically set it and all sounds pretty good). Does the right side, generally, run hotter than the left? Thanks...

    That elusive weak spark

pamcopete, Thanks for the response! As for the spacer, unless you recommend it, I am fine with the 0.5mm play. As long as it doesn't interfere with the operation of the hall sensor, I won't worry about it. I really appreciate your help and insight! -Thank you

    That elusive weak spark

pamcopete, I am about 1/3 the way through the installation, I have installed the mechanical advance, the Pamco unit plate, and the advance rod. Okay, now for clarification - the advance rod has the necessary locating pins in it already, so therefore two of the three in the kit are...

    That elusive weak spark

pamcopete - thank you for these clarifications! Now, I am confident that I am clear on the wiring. I will just follow the directions (www.yamahaxs650.com) on installing the advance mechanism and doing the timing. Any other hints that I should know? (Remove the TCI and cash in on it, tape...

    That elusive weak spark

pamcopete, So, let me make sure I am clear on the wiring (still haven't seen the Pamco unit yet). For the wiring, I can connect the coil (+) terminal to the battery via a 10 A inline fuse. Then, the red/white wire from the original coil (kill switch) will go the the red wire on the Pamco...

    That elusive weak spark

So, basically wire it up through the existing ignition fuse (10A) in the fuse box under the seat. Would it be better to use a new inline fuse that is dedicated solely to the coil or does it matter? Thanks for all you input! BTW - I get my Pamco today, I can't wait to get it in and be done...

    That elusive weak spark

pamcopete - Thanks, I have spent a bit of time at the site and read almost everything. I also have visited the thread here. So, I feel more informed about the Pamco system. It is possible to wire up the new "ultimate" system from mikes and also use the relay for the kill switch? Is the...

    That elusive weak spark

Second thoughts on the TCI, I think that somewhere there is a problem. I've decided to upgrade to an electronic ignition system, probably a Pamco. I am still looking for a step by step installation guide that will walk me through most of it...

    That elusive weak spark

The simple test worked to check the TCI and it is good working order, not fried as I thought. Just dug out the old stock coil (which I originally thought was the problem), soldered on some wires, and will stick it back on and see if there is spark at the plugs. There may be sufficient voltage...

    That elusive weak spark

xjwmx - thanks for the heads up on cleaning the carbs. I will have to revisit them. Also, I have never done a valve adjustment for clearance. I will also have to look in on that too. Any links or how to's out there for the '81 XS650? xsjohn - yeah, so far I have never removed the factory...

    That elusive weak spark

Yeah, I went to switch the spark plug leads to see is the problem would switch sides; however, there was no spark at all on either side.... So, now I need to find out if the power is going from the TCI to the coil. I will test this by connecting my multimeter lead to the orange wire on the...

    That elusive weak spark

xsjohn - Thanks for the diagram and the input! I have three more electrical things I want to check out before I finally pull the carbs and disassemble them. Clean the kill switch contacts Check the orange wire at coil to see if TCI is good (i.e. operating coil) Change current coil with old one...

    That elusive weak spark

To follow-up on the compression test - both cylinders were around the 140-150. I didn't do multiple tests; however, next time I pull the plugs I will check again. As far as the wires that connect to the coil. With the key on one (red with white strip is live) what does the other one do (orange)?

    That elusive weak spark

xsjohn - I would go out and run it like you suggest; however, after that initial mile or so the left side is so fouled that the bike just dies under load... Anyway, I will update after checking the mentioned items. yamaman - I replaced the stock coil with one from mikesxs (high output...

    That elusive weak spark

Whoa, I don't ride ten miles... I do notice that the left side does stay cooler than the right side. I guess that I will know more once I switch the plug leads as far as where else to look. As for the carbs, here is the guide that I followed (I swear, I cleaned the sin out these puppies)...

    That elusive weak spark

xsjohn - I have the compression gauge that will bolt right in. Let me make sure I am clear on checking the compression; remove plug(s), insert compression gauge (or thread it in snug), turn engine over 3-5 times. Repeat for other cylinder. Is there a simple guideline for knowing the threshold...

    That elusive weak spark

Thanks, this sounds good, I will check the compression in each cylinder (as I recall, I did this once before but the throttle wasn't open and the values were in the 90s). I can switch the plug leads and see what happens (just straight up change them?). If the weak spark remains on the left, I...

    That elusive weak spark

I have had my 1981 XS650/H for four seasons now and I think it is one of the best bikes ever make. As an engineering student, I marvel at the simplicity of the bike and am amazed at the way people can modify it (this site is a real showcase for talented people !) and I love the wealth of...
