1970 XS1 Clutch help

Finishing things up before I take it for its first ride since 78'. Anyway, to adjust the clutch per manual it says to loosen the lockout, tighten the screw, back it off a 1/4 turn and finish the rest at the handle bars... problem is, after backing the screw out, there isn't enough thread to catch the lock-nut, what's going on? Also it has a whine when clutch is engaged. Thanks!
 
I think you're missing one or more of the 5/16" balls in the pushrod assembly. You should have the long pushrod so your assembly would be long rod - ball - valve or mushroom shaped piece. The ball that usually falls out and gets lost is the one in the worm gear itself. That's probably the one you've lost.
