Hey guys, I've been trolling on here for a few months now and thought it was about time I shared my progress on the 1979 XS650 Special. I've been living in the Pittsburgh area for a little over a year now and was looking for a toy for the winter. I track the majority of my work/progress through a blog I started which helps me share with family and friends back home in CT. The bike will also be for sale shortly after completion and some break-in riding.

blog link is HERE

The project started back in October when I found a 1979 XS on craigslist with a little over 5000 miles on it and has the title. The bike was pretty nasty looking because it spent some time sitting outside. Apparently, the original owner drove it daily until it just died one day. Then he just parked it for several years before selling it to the gentleman I bought it from who never put time in trying to fix it.

Here's a pic of when I got it home. Just about everything had rust on it, so I think it was a worthy donor for a hardtail.

Here's some of the mess I was dealing with. Yes that is a mouse nest completely filling the battery box!

I thought I had a picture of it but the fuse panel was completely rusted out. So I just cut each pair of wires from each fuse holder, twisted them together, and after a quick run through the fuel passages in the carbs it fired up. Of course it didn't like to idle without the choke and no filters but that didn't matter at this point because all I needed to know was that it could run.

All of my progress details can be found in the blog, but here's some specifics.

TC Bro's Hardtail
rear 18" spoke wheel (white rim, black hub)
front 21" spoke wheel (white rim, black hub)
stainless spokes front/rear
tcbros gusset plates
Rich Phillips seat
honda cb650 ignition coil
tcbro's battery box
HHB lowering kit and tank mounts
peanut tank
avon speedmaster front and safety mileage rear tires
ribbed fender
1 piece clutch pushrod
velocity stacks
custom exhaust
custom electronics housing

Engine was also rebuilt with a full gasket kit, carb rebuild kits, sized up the carb jets 1 step, and new piston rings from a Honda Civic. I found the specifics on the rings in the Tech section and what a great find it was. A set of 4 cost a little more than what just 1 OEM set would be. During the rebuild I cleaned up the engine as best as I could. I think I would have liked to soda blast everything, but I think this look will go with the bike more.

The tank and fender will be sanded and left in a brushed finish, as will the engine tappet and side covers. The exhaust will be painted with black VHT exhaust paint and then wrapped in DEI titanium exhaust wrap.

Thanks for looking, I'll try and keep updates here as well as the blog.

Thanks for the compliments. Yea that is the stock brake pivot. Worked out pretty well, had to trim the under side of the engine mount so that I could slide in the pivot into the mount.

Did some work on the electronics tank tonight. They are 5" pieces that I got from bungking.com.

I used a 3/4" wide piece of 12 gauge steel to make a lip to weld onto the dome. This would make the assembly look a little cleaner and also add a mounting point. The bolts that will mount the lid will also go through the center plate holding the electronic components.

Next the bottom will get a lip and the welds will get cleaned up more.

Kinda looks like a little trash can right now. Soon it will transform into a fire hydrant...

Got my kick starter finished tonight. I put 4 1"x1/2" nylon spacers inside the pedal with a 4"x3/8" grade 8 bolt through it.

Also got my headlight in from ebay. $12 well spent, excellent condition, visor, and the bulb is still good.

You can clean up your front motor mount by removing that radiator looking cover. I saw another guy do it on his build, takes 5 minutes witha cut off wheel...

Thanks, but I already did and powder coated it too. I guess I dont have any pics of it.

edit: can sorta see it here

Kinda neglected you guys a little, so heres an update. Finished up a custom brake linkage. The stock one was too short with the hardtail of course so I made a whole new one with 1/4" rod and the linkage end from the stock one. I threaded the adjustable end with 1/4"-20 the same length as the stock end and used a nut for the spring stop. I ran a 1/4"-20 tap through the stock adjuster without a problem, but also put a jam nut on the end just in case (not pictured).

Wow it has been a while since I've shared anything here. The blog is up to date for those who check there. I still have to paint the electronics tank and battery box, I just haven't made my mind up on color. I've put a little over 220 miles on so far. She pulls very hard and is a blast to ride. Here are a few bad cell phone pics I took last night.

Here are a couple detail pics. The first one shows the neutral and high beam LED's I put in the custom speedo bracket holding the stock speedo.

These are some close ups of the electronics tank finished up. It has a ground lead, a power lead, starter lead, a connector to the stock charging harness (including neutral signal), and a connector to the main bike harness. Also is key start and reachable from under the back of the seat.

Looks great Smalls!

Do you have any closeup pics of the petcock setup you used? I'm having issues with the ones I have hitting the carbs.

Thanks!

Thanks guys!

btaksier - yea here's some pics of the petcocks. They're 1/8" NPT lawnmower petcocks from ebay with 1/8" to 1/4" NPT adapters from home depot. I soldered a piece of copper tubing I had laying around to one of the adapters so the other one would be a 'reserve'.
