75b Frontend redo and deep clean

Warm tires are so much easier to remove.Especially at this age.Snip-snip!Only removed 2 correctly to save in case the order is wrong for reference.Used to save them all.LolBlasting inner hub and trying Half miles idea I’d noticed in one of his threads a while back using the hammered finish on the inner of hub.Loved his.

I use this method if painted with a rattle can to re-expose the aluminum border. The 3” Roloc discs work well.Red first, then green.Paint it all after minimal taping. If using a 2part system through a spray gun it’s to hard after curing and risks side chips and/or splintering when removing. I tape all the wanted exposed borders.

I think you mean 2" Roloc discs? By red I think you mean what they call maroon, a medium grit equivalent to 150 grit paper .....

RolocGrits.png

You have to be careful with the medium grit as it will remove aluminum quite readily. I only use them to remove deep scratches and gouges. On aluminum I mostly use the blue (very fine) and gray (super fine). The blue is good for removing most corrosion and discoloration, the gray almost polishes the part. After the gray, you can usually move right on to the buffing wheels.

I knew I’d blow it trying to make the point about the roloc disc working well for this particular type of cleaning.Thank you for the clarifications.👍

Before I built my stand IMG_0740.jpegIMG_0741.jpegIMG_0739.jpegI would just use a couple of jack stands to static balance, taping the weights in place until I’m sure there’s no movement.

Wheel is in the clamps ready for prep cleaning before the polishing begins. Then it’ll get relaced.Ready to button up the wiring.

I know the original spoke nipples have washers on them but I never use any on new spokes. I've never had an issue because I didn't. And a couple re-spoking tips - the start is all important. Screw that up and the pattern won't work out. The spoke holes in the flanges don't align side to side, they're offset. You have the choice of starting the inner spoke on the lower flange ahead or behind the inner spoke on the top flange. It must start ahead of it .....

On used hubs, I try to place the inners and outers in holes that originally had that type of spoke. Even after polishing, you should still be able to find a few original outer holes by the marks the old spoke left .....
