83 XS650 will not shift....

Took the 83 XS650 for a ride last night after rebuilding the carbs..
It was running like never before...perfect...Then stopped for a stop sign and nothing on the upshift. I wasn't running it hard 30mph tops.
All of a sudden the bike would only shift into 4th and 5th gear.....
No 1st, 2nd 3rd or neutral....
Any idea what could have gone wrong?

There are is a spring on the shift shaft that hooks between change lever one and change lever two. The spring keeps change lever two engaged with the shift drum.
Page 80 in the Clymer repair manual shows this spring. It tells how to adjust the shift shaft there too. you need to pull the right side engine cover to access the spring. Not really hard but can be messy, oil running all over. Should be able to change spring with out removing the clutch.
