96-03 Sportster Tank...rear mounting question

I picked up a 96-03 sporty tank which has the different rear mount than the earlier models, little metal loop that sits in the tunnel with the ears pushed towards the front. Who has used them and howd u mount the back of the tank? Ive got some ideas such as metal "straps" off the frame to bolt to or the possibility of cutting the rear tabs and re-using one as a tab and just using a bung in the back. The bung to me sounds like the way to go, but id figured id ask around to see what other may have done.
