carb syncing

at this particular moment everything about calling all destroyers is benched adjusted with nothing getting a fine adjustment. as a result its a best to kick to life.

ive researched various options for carb synch and it looks like ive been convinced a manometer is the way to go.

a local shop had a set of carb synch tools that looked like this http://www.kzrider.com/forum/3-carburetor/405255-what-is-the-best-carb-sync-tool-for-the-basic-shop#405289
but the salesman told me they were hard to use

then it seemed like these might be a way to go http://www.kzrider.com/forum/3-carburetor/405255-what-is-the-best-carb-sync-tool-for-the-basic-shop#405427 but im cheap

i know for a fact these work really well as we used a pair to tune up my friends cb550. hes since then lost them go figure
http://kzrider.com/forum/2-engine/392703-carb-sync-tool-recomendations#392740

upon further investigation it seemed like the diy manometer is the way to go http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37 due to it being cheap, easy, and accurate

ive already bought whats needed to make it and so far im in about 9 dollars. i will synch the carbs and see just how good this diy manometer really is...

I've seen some fantastic work before. And I gotta say great job man. You should be proud. FTF!! Bike looks bitchin!

ahhhhh how a newbie learns

ok so breaking in the motor like im supposed to i notice a leak formed behind the timing covers. i also noticed that the advanced unit is SUUUUUUPER sensitive along with my carbs being really tough to dial in.

my carbs are acting like theres a vaccum leak. the manometer is not working at all (more on this later) and while cleaning up the garage i found some gaskets http://www.mikesxs.net/product/18-0865.html i forgot to install. they go on between the carb manifolds and the cylinder head. could this be my issues? we will see....

for whatever dumb reason i ended up going with stock cam bushings. not sure why i didnt this. but the thought occured to me that the camshaft felt like it was swimming in the stock bushings. so i ended up replacing the stock bushings with some real good after market bushings. onced installed the shaft fits snug and by snug i dont mean i had to force it in. i mean it feels like its supposed to be that way.

heres a thread about an easy way to remove camshaft bushings http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=814&highlight=cam+bushing

im leaking oil at the same spots on both sides of the motor. too weird! when i had the advanced unit and chamshaft apart i made it a point to inspect where the oil leaks were originating from. i thought maybe a gasket or o ring was missing. well turns out i had the camshaft seals installed backwards. http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20857&highlight=camshaft+seal

drumroll please......and the newbie award goes to me!!!

dude, SHUT UP. if you're a newb at this nobodied thunk it.

Calling All Destroyers is pretty much done. I had to have an unexpected surgery that has interrupted breaking in the motor and ripping LOS ANGELES. i received great news today. i finally received the paper work from the guy who know a guy who has a friend that was able to get the bike in my name. as suspected a mechanical / storage lien was put on the bike and as a result the bike was put into the name of the guy i know. forms came with the paper work that allows the lien holder to sell the bike to a new buyer.

the forms are all in my name and i will have to visit aaa or dmv for the next step. im going to try with aaa but im foreseeing that i will be visiting the dmv regardless.

and yes i did all the work without a title in hand.

very ballsy of you... but with a name like RpNSHt I am not surprised :laugh:

So how about a proper photo shoot of the bike, it is absolutely awesome and I think you have inspired a bunch of folks. I know I got a shit load of ideas from you for my next build.

Ohhhhhhh. i thought this post in the other thread was the op posting that he finally got it done. and then i get over here and think i'm reading the other thread again.
:banghead:

i NEVER woulda done all the work without title. you CRAZY.
:bike:

OKAY! ive been mia for a bit. i had a tumor surface that needed to be removed, then i moved, then i got really sick... all while i was trying to finishing touches on this beast. the following are some updates i slipped on posting while my arm was cut open and lungs were filled with evil...

busting welds:

while i was ripping so cal on calling all destroyers i noticed a little wet spot on the tank. 24 hrs later with the bike resting on its kick stand i realized that i busted a stock weld near the tank mounts. this caused the gas to run out of the tank and stream down the edge of the tank ruining the clear coat.

NEWBIE ALERT yes i probably should have reinforced these welds. theres no excuse for my impatience or being a newbie...

anyways, after talking to the painter, they assured me the clear coat could be fixed. well turns out after welding the mounts back up i decided to coat the inside of the tank.

theres a lot of disucssion on what liner to use http://www.xs650.com/forum/search.php?searchid=525617
the common consenses is kreem is worthless so i ended up using red-kote
http://damonq.com/red-kote.html

its very easy to use and recommend it. i will now do this to all my future tanks. however i learned the hard way. red kote has some literature that says something along the lines of ..." dont use on a tank that has all ready been painted as fumes can destroy paint job." obviously i ignored this and went ahead and used the product anyways.

24hrs later red kote was solid as a rock and the inside of my tank looks like a ruby (to match my helmet) however my custom paint job........totally...........destroyed.....in every way. the paint just crumbled off.

F%^&

my painter and i came up with a new idea for the tank and all this trouble ended up being a blessing at the expense of my time and wallet!

the paint scheme is based on the blue that matches the inner part of my headlights. theres also some candy involved and pin striping. the whole think looks way more dynamic and like its moving. tight

above i mentioned some thoughts on carb synching
do yourself a favor don't waste your time like me
buy this http://kzrider.com/forum/2-engine/392703-carb-sync-tool-recomendations#392740

yes i know is a little pricey but it beats wasting your time on some mad scientist b.s. manometer

once i plugged this baby in my carbs were synched within 5 minutes.
its worth every penny

the greatest lesson ive learned on this build is to spend the money on the proper tools in the beginning as it will save time, trouble, and frustration and in the end youll be on the road faster
id rather be spending my time ripping then reinventing the wheel anyways....

with the carbs synch'd and timing set, calling all destroyers purrrs at idle like a very angry beast. while setting the carbs and timing the bike started acting funny. when the key was turned off and pulled out of ignition switch, the bike would still run...i called it ghost running.

and by ghost running i mean stay on. if gas was given while the key was out, the bike would choke out and die, turning itself off. to say the least, this isnt good. every single system was probed with a ohm meter, as a short was suspected. i couldnt find any type of short...

F^&*

i concluded that the regulator must be bad. the only reason this was concluded was due to the readings of 12.8 volts charging at idle and +13 volts at rev. for some reason this seemed low to me. i contacted the main man himself HUGH who was kind enough to volunteer to test my regulator for me on his bench set up. but decided to attempt to forgo any down time, the regulator got probed with the ohm meter.

one probe of the ohm meter got connected to the red wire coming from the regulator and the other on one of the three yellow wires going into the regulator (which would come from the stator) i was getting the following readings: 310 kohms, 291 kohms and 305 kohms

i immediately sent this info to Hugh along with the discovery that the ignition key switch i bought from low brow customs was discovered to be faulty. http://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=342

hugh's response: "Bypass the ignition switch, you'd be surprised at how often they go bad. With those values, the charging system is operating properly."

i should listened to this blackbetty http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19990&highlight=ignition+key+switch as it sounds like we had the same issue

i have a new ignition switch headed my way and its not the one low brow offers. hopefully the ghost has been exorcised...
