hey im a newbie to the xs world and was just wondering where i could score some aftermarket air cleaners that will fit my stock 78 650, also i was wondering if anyone had any tips on exhaust.

Those cheap pods you see all over the net are terrible and do not work well on the 650 CV carbs. The best choice is the UNI foam pod, not very expensive and works very well. For your BS38 carbs, you will want the #UP4200 or the #UP4200ST (dual layer). Just about any cycle shop can get them for you or most of the big on-line places have them. Don't use the special foam filter oil, it's too thick for these. Oil them using a 50-50 mix of gas and plain motor oil.

Yes, the 2" I.D. mounting flange on the 4200 is a perfect slip fit on the BS38s.
