I recently picked up an 81 with 24K miles. It put all those miles on in it's first year then hit a deer and has been sitting in a shed since. Put a battery and plastic gas tank on it and it started and ran just fine. I didn't even touch the carbs! I did have to tap a float bowl a time or two to stop an overflow. No title so it's coming apart. Not super high miles but thought I'd share. I have been through about 25 XS650s mileage has ranged from 4K, to 35K miles. These weren't touring bikes for most of the years of production. More typically a guy's first street bike.
