I was riding yesterday and in a hard pull clicked up to get me a toe full of 5th and missed. I was able to hit it again and went on, but this is the second time it has happened. It didnt offer to before I put the od 5th in but I only put around 25 miles on the bike before I concluded that it was a must. Could it be a pre-existing condition...possibly. I am planning on doing a up/down or road race cut when I take it down for rephasing this fall

little spring inside the clutch cover that connects to the end of the shift shaft is worn out, fallen off or missing. dont feel like looking up the pictures and all that. but at least i gave you something to search for.

In that link is a pic of the spring between the shift lever #1 and #2. There is also a srping holding a roller against the shift drum pins.
If either of these springs are weak or broken, shifts can be porr at best.
