Anyone here ever done a port and polish?

I did one of these in 1975. Bought engine fully stripped in a box. Had 750 kit and new cam. I had the sleeves fitted, fitted new, very high comp pistons, cut away valve relief grooves in pistons a little to allow valves to not contact, tidied ports enough to match well, made bigger exhaust pipes, fitted 42mm carbs. It idled around 1400rpm but very rough, vibrated heavily at all revs, and went very hard. Open the throttle at any speed and it just pulled like a train.
