what are the stock axle adjuster castings made of? wanting to build a hardtail off of the stock swing arm on my 78 xs. was just wondering about welding them. thank you.
Hi johnny and welcome,
they ain't castings, the swingarm endplates are made from mild steel plate, back then most likely by stamping, these days they'd be cut by laser or waterjet.
Any of the usual welding machines will work on them OK.
Yet another XS650 meets the sawzall, eh?
Ah well, I guess it makes the remaining stock bikes more valuable.
fredintoon, this one is for me! just something to play with. I do have two others for restoration. I have over 20 years experience as a h-d tech . I finally have time in my life to start restoring and building my dream bikes. thank you for you input.

Hi johnny,
if you are building your dream bike, go for it!
Post build pictures.
But I started riding on hardtails although we called them rigid frames back then and my dream bike had rear suspension.
