I though I had sorted this out on my xs2, went to take it for a ride today and filled up on 91 octane. It popped through the right carb when I kicked it over and a slight backfire returned on that side.

When I got home I checked the carb, tried a couple of adjustments (butterflies, idle..)I also found no air leaks so I thought id put in some octane boost into the tank. After this a took it around the block and it did seem a bit better?

So, could the lower octane petrol (91) cause a slight backfire?

I'm about to go strip the carbs again just to recheck everything....

Thanks

Lean conditon, plugged or dirty jets - Leaking CV diaphram pin or tare in the boot - octane means nothing other than preventing detonation from high compression or over heating.

try swapping the wires on your coils, they might be backwards depends on who did the points last time

Plug color tells a whole lot. Check your exhaust for leaks as well. Hot exhaust mixing with the cool ambient air can make it pop. Most likely a lean condition as Jim said.
