I am trying to get my 1980 XS650 going again. I have got the bike so that it idles nice but when i go to accelerate it backfires and misses, is that due to a lean mixture or is that a timing issue? Im pretty new at tuning bikes so any assistance would be appreciated. Does anyone know the specific presets for the BS34 carbs? Could it be faulty or dirty points?

If the bike has the original ignition, it would be an electronic set-up and pre-set from the factory. There are no points or timing adjustments. The carbs may need to be cleaned, or cleaned again if you've already done so. Sometimes it takes a couple cleanings to get them really done right. Set the mix screws at between 3 and 3 1/2 turns out. Anything less could cause some of that popping.
