I bought a Bikemaster trugell battery model YTZ10S Its a
12v 10ah/r -8.5?
normal charging amps .85a
max charging current 2.55
120cca
Normal application is for a 03-06 honda 600rr street bike

Bike has factory charging system, kick only. Only has head/tail light/instrument lights.

I had the bike idling for about 5mins to warm up while I put my gear on, backed it out of the drive way put it in gear and it zonked out then a few seconds later heard a pop, thought it was a back fire, then noticed smoke from under the seat. Pulled the pan off and the sealed top was off and 2 of the "tube covers" and the groud wire was fried.

I put a stock battery on it and it fired up and seamed to run fine.

Ive been using this battery no problems for about a month now.

Think it was a problem with my bike or the battery before I go to the shop tomorrow and cash in on the warranty?

Well only the ground wire burned up, I had it running after this happened with the stock battery, and everything seamed to work as usual..

I did notice prior to the battery burning up the headlight getting brighter as the revs increased. That thread you posted mentioned the headlight thing but didnt say what exactly it meant. I will go try the little bypassing the regulator trick posted. I am assuming my bike a 1980 has a solid state regulator.

If you still had it running, the quick test would be to quickly start it, see what the voltage is across the battery. If it's over 14.5, it's cooking the battery and everything else as well.

hi guys ,,,,as far a batteries go i got sick of filling liquid and having spilt liquid from my cheapish battery ,,,so no both my 1980 gs1000e and my 1976 framed xs650 both run heavy duty sealed batteries for gs1000 suzuki they are the same size as the xs650 batterys but alot more cranking ,,,and yep sealed ..even if i leave it for a week or so it only drops off about 1 little fraction line on the charger ,,5 mins,,, and its full again,,, regards oldbiker

I know it may not look like it, but this battery was a sealed type also. They still need to put electrolyte in there at the factory. On an SLA battery it's gel, but they seal it off afterwards. In this case, it boiled the battery so much it popped the seals.

Exactly. I am also running a much smaller battery from a late model honda, so it will fit under my seat. I havent had a chance to do those tests, hopefully today after I get done work. The honda dealership did at least exchange the battery no questions asked.

So I pulled the meter out. At idle bikes making around 12-12.5volts at 3k its making 14.45 a hair shy of the 14.5 that website suggested. I noticed a few spikes over 14.5 when I was just getting throttle happy and reving it with no consistency. Battery on its own with out the bike running is 12.5ish

I didnt pull the side cover and ohm out any of the brushes or other components. Think its possible I just got a bum battery from the start? It seems like the reg/rec is working okay?... I just dont want to have to put a battery in the thing ever 2-3 weeks, or get stuck somewhere because of it.

Try it again, but hold the throttle consistently at say 3-4,000 rpm. Digital VOM meters are sometimes slow to respond to changes, so you'll need to hold it at a consistent speed to see a consistent reading.
