cam chain master rivet

Running a 78 motor in my bike, pulled the jugs off for new gasket set and couldn't slide the bearings off the camshaft so ground off the old master link for the tear down.

After I put the new gaskets on, went to put the new master link on from Mikes, part 01-8815, and it's to thick to fit through the links of the cam chain. Is the other master rivet Mike's offers thinner and that's my problem, wrong master link?

You bought a Tsubaki master link. It has larger pins than the OEM chain by DID. The product descriptions at Mike's XS state the difference very clearly. If I were you I'd buy the Tsubaki cam chain to go with that master link.
