Stuck on adjusting the valves. Well Ive gotten myself into another pickle before Born Free 11 last week. It started with just getting the bike finished to overnighting a camshaft kit and rocker arms from mikesXS. I have a 1980 Yamaha XS650SG that currently started ticking at the top. It was diagnosed as a bad camshaft and rocker arms.

1. Take off the head of the engine.
2. Take out rocker arm pins and replace with new rocker set.
3. Replace the camshaft at TDC with marking on the side with the chain adjustment in
4. Add gasket seal to the head and replace with torch specs.
5. adjusting the valves...

Is there a starting point to adjust the valves? or have them fully unscrewed?

Here's how I figured it out. Loosen all four adjusters a whole lot. Line up the crank timing marks. Tighten the adjusters until they touch the valve stems. Turn the crank one complete revolution. Adjust the pair of valves than aren't pushed down. Turn one more revolution. Adjust the other pair. Quite a bit of noise up there is apparently normal, but even if yours was, it's freshened up now.
