My bike will run for about 8 miles at normal speed then die like it is not getting fuel. Wait a couple minutes will start and run for a few minutes then die again. Any ideas?

What bike?
It sounds to me like the fuel tank is not venting. Is it a Special with a new fuel cap seal? If so, the filter material in the fuel cap rotted and plugged the vent.
Of course, it could be any number of things, depending upon what bike you have, and what modifications have been done.

Likely tank issue i heard a sucking sound whenbi opened the tank. It is a new cap from mikes any history of issues with them?
Run the bike with the cap loose. If the problem goes away, the cap is not venting.

Does anyone know where to get a latch pin for the tank? I lost one and am using a rivet post.
90249-03123-00 PIN,SPEC'L SHAPE is the part for the late bikes. Google search as it is an obsolete part. Speed & Sport may have it.
Once again, it's more challenging to help when we don't know what bike you have. You should add the model to your signature.
