XS650SE. The clutch adjuster has a chrome cover that you push in. Mine rattles. It's new. I have gently spread out the splines and now it does not push in quite so easily but it still rattles. It feels like there should be a small diameter rubber seal fitted to the cover? Am I missing a trick here?

No you are doing it right. No o-ring from the factory but no reason you couldn't try stretching a thin o-ring over the tabs.
I've even used a push in type sink faucet hole cover from Menards with no problems! :p
Mebby if we saw a pic of the recess where the caps goes?

One of mine used to rattle too.. iirc I carefully placed several dabs of clear silicone on the cap 120 degrees apart, let it fully cure, then pushed it on rattle free. Can’t put too much on or the cap won’t snap into place. Oring sounds like a good option too.

If the silicone doesn’t work it’s pretty easy to remove. Don’t put on a large amount - just a few dabs. If you do several layers, checking figment in between you should be successful.
