I have an 82 engine that didn't come with a clutch rod. The side panel too had be cut to make the chain for visible apparently. I'm trying to use the clutch rod from my 76 and the side panel from the 76 on the 82 engine but when it's bolted down it seems that the clutch is engaged and it won't kick. Are these parts compatible? Or do I need to use the original side panel and order a specific clutch rod?

They're compatable. One ball at each end of the rod? A gasket tween cover n case?

If the last time it was adjusted was with a gasket, then possibly, depending on how thick the gasket was. But there's enough travel to adjust it w/o a gasket too.

Yes, with switching all those parts, you'll have to do a re-adjustment of the worm gear adjuster. Gasket or no gasket won't make much difference, at least not enough to disengage the clutch. And don't forget to loosen the adjuster up at the hand lever all the way before doing the worm adjustment.
