My exhaust runs right behind the cam chain acorn nut. I'm trying to adjust the cam chain using the method in my haynes manual. I have the left side cover off and I'm turning the motor ccw. I know most of you adjust the chain while the motor is running and warmed up. Since I'm adjusting mine with the bike off and cold how can I compensate for heat swell when the bike is at operating temperature. Right now the pin inside the 10mm adjuster nut is recessed about 2mm inside the nut. I'm assuming that when the engine swells it will expand about 2mm and then it should be flush with the nut. Is this correct? Any suggestions? Should I do something different?

With the engine off, turn it over to a point where the plunger is in. Now adjust the tension to get the plunger to be flush with the end of the adjuster.
Now if you want you can start the engine and watch the plunger. It should move in and out 1 or 2 mm With it coming just flush.
Shut it down and put the cap on. Enjoy the ride.
