decompression lever?

the engine. the early 650's had a weak starter so they put a decomp valve in them. thats why they have the one square "valve/tappet" cover. the lever was on the R handlebar and I believe also hooked to the starter switch. The very first xs had no starter and all the covers are the same.

Decompression levers were use on 72 XS650 and 73 TX650 to help the starter because of their weak electric system. And yes, it was also the starter switch. They were also used on other old bikes, that had no electric starter, to help to "kickstart" them. It raise an exhaust valve to decrease the compression a little bit.
