dim headlight

hey i just got my first bike a 1980 yamaha xs 65 0im try to restor it. its gone good but my head light is so dim i cant drive at night it shifts to hi beam but that is evan worse do i need to replace the headlight or is it a grounding wire i love this bike and would love to see it brot back to its former glory any help would be much appreciated :banghead:
 
If your bike still has the original type fuse panel (4 position glass fuses), that may very well be your problem area. They were OK 30 years ago, bit they are now worn out. The clips have lost tension. Resistance increases and the voltage drop causes intermittant problems.

Replace with automotive blade type fuse holders. Solder the leads and use heat shrink tubing.
 
Might have a look at your brushs. There is a wear limit line on them.
Have you checked voltage at the battery?
