When fitting new brake pads in the early style caliper how loose should the pads fit? The ones I took our were quite snug but the new ones will fall out on their own even with the shims installed.
They won't fall out when the calipers are mounted.
As far as the old being a bit tighter fit, it could be rust on the pads backing plate. As long as they don't rattle they will be fine.

Sounds like the only way to tell is install on the bike and go for a test ride. Reinstalling the wheel could be fun trying to keep the pads back while getting the disc in between them. The original pads weren't too bad on their backing plate. Perhaps the side clearance in the caliper was less due to accumulated dust etc.?
