just to be clear, folks; I never said the ends of the ring touch - but the gap does close - that's why it's important for the ends to be square, so they DON'T touch

The goal is for the ends of the ring to be a close to one another without touching, when the engine is at maximum operating temp

The initial gap accounts for thermal expansion of all related components
