79's used dual vacuum actuated petcocks which have a different hole spacing than a 76.
79 tank badges were secured with 2 small screws on each side . The "Standards" have holes on the same horizontal plane while the "Special" badges had an offset (vertically) plane.
Which 79 tank style are you considering?
Having mounted both a "Special" tank as well as a "Standard" tank on this 79 Special II it is clear that those do interchange.
I do prefer the "Standard" shape however.
They will swap........ All tanks from 74-84, (Standard and specials), are a straight swap. What you will find is the petcock area is different between the 76 and 79 standard tanks. 76 tank has a bulge the petcock sits on. The 79 is flat. this because the vacuum petcocks protrude further out from the tank, in other words, different height between the Manual and Vacuum petcocks. Not a lot of room between the tank and carbs...............79's are nice tanks and look great as the colour changes in different lights, the thing is the badges have a habit of is fading and are don't keep a good look, as in bright and shiny. Can be painted. Probably best to do as to buy a set can cost as much as the tank
Here’s the tank I found on Facebook Marketplace. $350 located near Pittsburg, Pa. if someone is interested I can send a link. Looks super clean inside as well.
