Gas tank rust..
Much of how the rust forms is particles SO fine that they will flow right through any fuel filter. Since the rust is heavier than fuel, it ends up forming a kind of mud in the float bowls. An occasional float bowl drain into a container for inspection is good preventative maintenance.
