Going Where No Tappet Has Gone Before

I'm feeling pretty stupid right now. I failed to lock down the left exhaust tappet on my 83XS and it came off last night on the way home and is nowhere to be found so I thought I'd have a little contest:

Tell me where I will find the tappet and lock down nut and what condition I will find them in and the winner owes me a beer.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go cry for a while.

Probably in with the cam. Or down with the cam chain, lying in the oil sump.

It's problably laying in one of the oil pools of your top end. If it went down the cam chain passage to the bottom end, I think you would've felt where it went.

It was in the valve cover-- one slight scratch on the side of one cam lobe but not so bad that I won't be firing it back up sometime tomorrow.
