hey all,
i found a rim 2001 gsxr 200mm rear. was wondering, can i use it for my chopper project? :) tnx in advance. i dunno, im just wondering, if its going to be a hassle? and did anyone tried em?

Anything can be done if you think it through and have some decent fab skills. Do some research on axle size and think offset sprocket.

well as im doing the a hard tail, i thought ill manage to fit it there. and get the rear axle from gsxr.

if you have to ask if something from a modern sportbike will fit this bike....then you lack the fab skills to do it i would say. straight answer no.

auch. well that was cold. tnx. i wonder how ya started with your fab skills. became pro in a split second eh. kewl.

minimal fab skills and lack the proper tools to make spacers and axles........thats why i restored the bike/rebuilt the motor on my 74. I have those tools and a manual and patience. No press, no lathe or cnc machine to do any custom work.

Nothing is bolt on when it comes to doing stuff like that. Nothing.

i wasnt expecting that :) that will be too damn easy. i dont like the easy road, too boring. the only answer i was looking for, yeah ya able - but need to work on it. or no - cant be done lol

Dare to dream brother! If different was easy as a bolt on then it wouldn't be different would it? Nobody starts out knowing it all, so ask questions, drain every resource possible and build what "you" want. In the end the only person you need to please is yourself. Join other forums as well and research just it is going to take to do what you want to do. I run Harley wheels and they are nowhere near factory Yamaha wheels. Its your bike, just post some build pics.

I'm not sure about the gsxr wheel but the Bandit1200 and the vstrom both have 20mm axles, same as stock xs650. I bring this up because you could use the caliper mount and make adaptor to use Suzuki caliper and it would slide on axle with no modification. The smallest tooth size sprocket I know of is 39 which is pretty big for the xs but you could change the front to 18 tooth to compinsate, this is a chopper and not speed trials bike :wink2: The other problem would be chain clearence, would need to offset or get a spaced out front sprocket, I've seen them somewhere? Hope this helps. Scott

you mean 200mm right? and how would i be certain that it would work? and yeah ive seen the offset, kinda expensive to buy - soo maybe ill find a way to make one :) thanks for the reply scott...

Howdy Howry, No I do mean 20mm axle size, not rim width. The offset kit is expencive but just the sprocket is not, I just can't remember where I seen it? Making one out of two would be easy :wink2: I don't think it would be hard to do  Top axle is xs and bottom is gsf1200, both fit each others wheel bearings perfect! They are the same diameter as is the DL1000 Vstrom axle. I have all three wheels and axles here and they are all interchangable.

soooo, are you saying that it should fit the xs650 axle? i have 2 of em, from 77 xs650d and from from 72 xs2.

I just looked up axle size for gsxr and it is 28mm, so no the xs axle won't work on that rim. Like I said earlier I did not know bearing size for gsxr but I do now :D

i couldnt find the sizes. tnx. sooo i guess it will be easier to get the axle from gsxr. cheaper and less hassle. eh? :)

Getting lost with this thread:confused: have you got the frame made? if so and it's made to xs width and the xs axle fits the bearings in the wheel you are using why wouldn't you use it? just set it all up go to a machine shop and get the spacers made, not every body has a lathe or the skills to make up their own fabrication, you can buy offset sprockets from any specialist, a machine shop can probably get them for you at a fraction of the price they will be sold for ready to go! the same goes for the rear, sprockets come in all sizes so long as there is enough room on the hub get one and have it made for the hub/wheel, the best thing to do is find a good machine/engineering shop that is used to this sort of work,

The reason I replied was I was thinking of the rear caliper mount. Thinking he could use stock one that would fit rear axle. Otherwise anything is posible with tools, skill and or $$$$$$$$ :D

scott tnx. jay tnx. no i didnt made a frame yet. but found an oppartunity to buy a fat tire for cheap, soo i thought to ask around. if ya do it yourself, the frame can be anything. i dont want to go crazy but with the 200mm tire it already the width of the rear frame, so ill have to take it off. all i want to tire for now is to get the right mesurments for the hard tail, so i wont get it wrong when ill do the pipes and such. and damn yeah, the axle of xs650 is 20mm. i guess ill be selling 2 axles and 2 swing arms, shoks, old fashion rims. and the frame if anyone lookin for project. got another motor 72, but not turning(can go for cheap). tnx again guys. and i will for sure ask about the calipers, hope the guy will have that as well :)

yamaha chop! totally true. ya just need to be motivated enough, and believe in yourself. plus good looking bike! and by the way, i would say its related to the topic, whats your rear tire specs? and what axle ya used? :)

The rear tire on my chop is a 240mm. I used a 1" axle on it, Paired with a one-off offset sprocket.

My turbo XS uses a Honda F3 rear wheel, which ironically uses the same size axle as the stock XS. I'm only running a 160mm on that though.
