So my roomate Ben called a guy about an XS. The fellow said it wasnt charging and the stator was probably caput. Ben asked if he had anything else kicking around and he had his sons raked and hardtailed 71 xs! How much? $600. hmmmm So a couple days later I borrow a trailer from the guy who sold me my TX and I'm off!
This guy runs a shop out in Alfred (very french part of Ontario) and years ago his son wanted an "old school bobber" So they gets their mitts on this bike, "hardtail it" (pics to follow) and add a springer front end. This sits the bike at too much of an angle so the they rake it. They've got most of it together when lo and behold his son gets into a messy divorce and dad buy the bike off him for a pittence to help out. 6 years later I enter the picture. and speaking of pictures here we go.
as it sits now in my dining room
Chomed rear hub. WHY chrome perfectly nice alunimum?
Again with the chome. French Canadians LOVE chrome
Our brilliant and well executed rear end......
Not sure how I feel about his method of raking but it IS straight and solid, albeit ugly.
More of the bike, everything is kinda mocked up here as envisioned by the previous owner. The seat is shit and will be changed, Im not even gonna bother figuring out that fender until the rear end is put together properly.
It is actually a kinda cool looking bike, lots of potential.
Again, this guy has been running a succesful shop for quite a while, supports himself and his family on it and goes ahead and calls this a hardtail?
Ah well. So as far as I know this is a 71, although no comression release is evident anywhere. The side covers that came in the box of shit seems to be correct for the early period bikes. Compression seems really good to my patented kickonometer, the front drum is something Im prettty happy about, and I was suprised by the existance of the springer. I'm sure I could just look up the numbers on it or the ownership and know for sure but at this moment I dont care. First things first is to get the rear end sorted. Instead of going the order everything (while bashing harley guys who do the same thing to customise their rides) Im gonna enlist the help of several friends who weld for a living to help with the frame. Everything else will be bent, moulded, and bodged together by yours truly. I havnt got the coin to build a $5000 oldschool-bobber/chopper-billetabortion, nor does that appeal to me. so stay tuned. I guess the TX is just gonna have to stay in one piece and continue to get the ever living shit ridden out of it
