My insurance company(state farm) won't insure a 77' with hardtail conversion since they say it's too modified from its original form. I'm located in Ontario Canada and am wondering if there's anyone on here from Ontario that can tell me who they're using for custom motorcycle insurance? I've checked out a few but won't insure bikes over 25 years old. What are people doing to insure hardtail bikes?

So is there anyone that can give me any info about this? Even you guys in the US. I'd really like to know if there's any special insurance companies anyone is using and what they're like.

That one I hadn't. They do insure Ontario riders. Just need to get some more info from seller to get a quote. Thank you very much.

In Ontario we have very few options . I went with Dalton Timmis , they are located in Burlington but I did the whole transaction on the web and phone or you have Duffy . State Farm was insuring vintage bikes but choppers might be a different story . Best not to tell them about the hard tail and send them a picture of a stock bike .

Not being straight with your insurer is a good way to have your coverage denied when you need it.

I am NOT implying to not be straight with them, just saying IF they DONT ASK DONT TELL. My insurance is just regular motorcycle insurance. Now the COLLECTOR car insurance on my bug thru Grundy is a different story, they require 12 pictures of the car and 2 of the garage it is stored in, when they saw the motor they THREW a red flag and jacked up the policy an addl $125.00 a year for the turbo and mods, then again thats a 30k stated value policy.

Good luck Bruddah !

You are referring to public liability which pays claims to people that you harm in some way in the operation of the m/c. So if there is a claim against you and your coverage is based on incorrect basic information supplied to the insurer about the type of bike, you may be denied coverage.

My problem is is that I have a lot of stuff insured through State Farm and they require pics for motorcycles. I thought of sending them a pic of another stock one I had but if something happens I'll prolly lose all my coverage and no company will be interested in insuring me. As soon as they saw the pic they said they're underwriter said no way. I looked Into dalton timis but they need to have a complete documentated appraisal before giving a quote. Bike is 5 hours away and the seller isn't interested in doing that. Just don't want to find out after buying it that it's gonna cost me an arm and a leg to ride it. If I get a good quote from a seperate company and they don't ask for pics then I'll prob go with them. As long as it doesn't affect my other insured stuff then I'm ok with it. But all in all I'd prefer to be straight with them. I hate dealing with bullshit. And thank you everyone for the info.

Although I am in the States, I've had my hardtail insured with State Farm for years. They have never asked to see it or picture of it. Must be a Canadian thing.

Yeah they're pretty aggressive for pics. At least they are through my location. My last Harley I insured they never asked for pics until almost a year later( obviously when it was a way in storage) any vehicles that I have full coverage on, they have to have pics of. Gonna ask then again if they'll change thier minds if I only go with liability. I'm only gonna ride it maybe once a week. I'll check progressive but not sure if they're in Canada?

Insurance companies employ people full time who's sole job is to figure out ways to weasel out of paying claims, you lie to them, you pay the damages to all involved..
Check if you can get ANY insurance before you use a 3rd party frame also. i.e. a MSO frame not a "recognized" VIN #
I had a go around with State Farm because we have horses. We had my sister in law's horse here. They just flat out dropped our coverage because we were "a boarding stable". They never called or sent a you must remove any "non-owned" horse letter. They sent just a certified "cancellation of coverage" letter. I didn't argue a bit, I found a different insurance company AND a different insurance agent.

Check out progressive! Super cheap!

In my experience being run over by a pickup, Progressive's performance as an insurer matched the low rates perfectly. Dumped them 2 weeks later when they told me it was "easier and cheaper" to "admit fault on our insured's behalf" (what the hell is THAT when the police report CELARLY states the truck was at fault!) Than to argue the point with the truck's insurance company. They even refused to go to the court house (like I did!) in Dallas and stand in line and shuck out 35 bucks for a copy of the report.

I presented the report to my new insurance company and explained why I was changing insurance companies, and they were more than happy to insure me at a competitive rate. That's Dairyland, and I continue to have them to this day.

Progressive's "customer retention specialist" had no good answers for why they did not represent my position correctly, and I told him to fuck off and I would spread this experience as thick and as far as I can. They also "charged" me a policy termination fee, so I did not get a refund on the balance of my policy for the year. Worthless fucks.

Buyer beware.
