Build thread for my bratstyle/bobber/cafe. What ever you want to call it, I like it!

Hello everyone, and thanks to everyone on here, I have already learned a great deal from this forum! Some of you may know me from the xs400.com site where I documented the start of a cafe build. A discovered crack in the engine case and difficulty finding parts put that project on the back burner.

So I picked up this sweet low mileage 650 and plan on doing a bratstyle build with high scrambler type pipes. I plan on doing it in stages so I can ride it in between in stead of a full tear down.

Below are some picks of progress so far. I removed a lot of weight, added clip ons, changed out seat, top yoke, modern fuse box, bobbed and raised the rear fender, and cleaned up the rear loop thus far.

Sorry for the crappy i phone pics, will use a better camera in the future.

Thanks for lookin and any thoughts or advise would be greatly appreciated!

Some better picks for you. Got fuse box done. New rear shocks, I think I got the stance right. What do you think?

Next on list: mount key/ignition/starter switch, horn button, and headlight switch to top yoke. Gonna remove all electrics from the bars.

Not sure why I keep posting, doesn't seem to be much interest but at least I will have a record of the build for myself.

I spent the day polishing my right side cover and fabbing up brackets to adapt my RAASK rearsets I had from my xs400 build. There is a thread under fabrication that details this.

I am also planning to convert a set of xs500 wheels so I have been getting a lot of good advice on this site, see my other posts.

So here is where I am. The exhaust is just mocked up to to check clearance. I plan on running Gordon Scott high pipes with mufflers but have to save up.

Looked at the odometer, sure is a low mileage bike. LOL
I like the top yoke, from where did you source it? Also, you going to do alloy wheels, 18" rear? If so, I think the rear wheel uses a disc brake.

hmusket, yoke is tc bros, scabber you are correct, motolanna seat and alkaline the shocks are just cheapos from mikes. plan on upgrading when funds allow. thought about rear disk but gonna do pandemonia's brembo kit so drum should suffice.

Thanks for the interest guys!

I assumed you were going to use the xs500 rear wheel because you wanted an 18" mag with a disc. As far as I know the xs500 mag wheel only uses the disc.

I like the rear shocks, what did you go with? What's the eye to eye distance?

I have no advice I just bought an XS last week.

Edit: never mind I see you got me from Mikes. Great stance.

HeY Doc!
Welcome to the site.
Your bike looks sweet Man.
I wouldn't mind meeting up and seeing Your bike in person.
I live just off Hancock and Orange Grove.
To bad Your bike wasn't at bike night then there would have been 2 Xs650s there

Carbon, nice to meet a local on here. Got some work to do before its ready for bike night. I live off Veterans and Chiquita, not far. Should definitely meet up. PM me with your cell and we'll set up a time. Would love your input/advice. I am brand new to building bikes, lots of experience with cars but not bikes. I am learning to weld, fab, wire etc. on this project.

Haven't gotten much done this weekend, got my inlays here, and working on their truck.

Did manage to mock up my "temp" exhaust until I can afford my Scott high pipes. Thanks Pampcopete for the adapter trick for the inner pipe on stock headers. Can't decide if I'm goin straight pipes (see stolen pic example) or use the emgo shorties.

Also decided on a color scheme. I painted an old broken side cover with cheap parts store paint as a test. I plan on ordering some nice 2K urethane and clear to do the real paint job.

What do you guys think?

Like it. Not a fan of the lower than the tree handlebars. The Eurosport bars would be my choice for comfort and looks on your bike. Just my opinion. Nice job.

Thanks scabber, I have a chrome set of those bars already actually, but when you see what I have planned for top yoke you'll see why I went clip on. Also not sure how comfy they'd be with the rearsets

Finally had some time today to work on the bike. Got the new drilled rotor on the front, I have a set of Ducats disks for it too but way too much machining of spacers to make it work! Got the Brembo caliper mounted and then mocked up the clip ones, controls. I have a beautiful stainless one piece brake line for it from Venhill but had to contact them and order a banjo bolt to fit the Ducati caliper. (apparently the Europeans use a fine thread bolt)

Next on list: modify rear xs500 18" wheel so I can have my Dunlop K70s mounted.

Then strip forks and all other parts that require hours of sanding and polishing.

Thought you might enjoy some pics of current progress. The tank is not the one I'm using, it is off getting painted.

Your coming along quite nicely Brother.
I need to get over there to see her in person.
You will get use to the aggressive riding position.
My sportbike has a very aggressive position and I love it
:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Life has been crazy, haven't had time to work on bike last few weeks but just got these pics from Scott up at Gordon Scott Engineering. I couldn't be happier! I found the mufflers and he read my mind on what I wanted! Can't wait to get them and bolt them on!
