so my 72 xs650 seems to be starving for fuel when cruising at 55 or so then i open her up. it kinda falls on its face .open exhaust, pod filters, clean carbs, adjusted valves, cleaned carbs. now what,timing?

72xs650aaron;

You need to tell us more info. As DBeach said...............does it have stock carbs?

When you had the carbs apart for cleaning, did you make note of the main jet and the pilot jet. They have numbers stamped on them. Have you owned the bike for a long period or did you just buy it? Did it ever run greater than 55 since you owned it?

Many riders get carried away and install jets that are too large. You need to compare your jets to the stock size jets on this table that was made up by 5twins. The stock jets are a starting point.

Yes, you have to have the timing correct..................use a timing light.

5twins and I wrote the Carb Guide (see tech section) once, and I'm not gonna write it again a piece at a time. Combustion=Compression+Ignition+Fuel. Compression and ignition defects can't be fixed through a carburetor.

Check diaphragm function.
