Been hooking up the wiring and have determined that rubber encased item underneath the head tube is a "lighting outage switch" after seeing one on e-bay. Looked for posts with no luck, so what does this thing do and is it needed? Any help would be great as I'm trying to keep the harness as simple as possible. Thanks, Kevin

Thanks, next question......."safety relay" can I get rid of that too? Will include a pic if required Kevin

I recommend you keep the Safety Relay.

If you want to get rid of it you can:

It controls the headlight...................if you have a 78 Special, then you have a "Lights" switch which will allow you to turn the headlight on and off, so no wiring change needed.

If you are using the starter motor, you will need to connect the red/white to the red/white. By doing that you lose the interlock protection feature. The SR will no longer cut out the starter motor automatically. The SR also prevents the starter trying to engage a running engine, if the black button is accidentily pushed...............you lose that also.
