Hey guys,

I have a decent running 1980 xs650.

It needs a rebuild unfortunately because the camchain needs replacing and the engine is leaking oil (slowly) in several places.

When I do this rebuild I am going to do it properly. PMA, rephase, performance parts, etc. I am going to strip the motor down completely and even split the cases to check bearings, replace seals, etc.

I just went out and bought 2 xs650 motors from a guy on CL (140 dollars, btw) in case I need parts and to use as a reference when I rebuild.

Here is where I need an opinion. Do I rebuild my currently working motor (and risk not riding for quite a while) or do I rebuild one of the unknown motors? Both motors have the head removed so I cant check compression.

My thinking is that since I am going to do such a serious rebuild I can start with anything, but I am unsure of the risk.

Best,
Adam

yeah, ok.

I guess my concern was pouring money into an unknown motor, but I suppose that if I tear it down and inspect everything it is no longer unknown.
