motor running rough

I have a 1979 xs650 which i picked up a couple of weeks ago, ran really great and strong but it recently started running rough. It seems like its running to rich, the idle keeps changing from being to high to too low when im running it and every time i let off the throttle when im moving the exhaust pops like crazy. i popped off the air filters and cleaned the carbs a little to see if that would help but it didnt. iv been playing with the idle adjuster screw but that dosent seem to change anything. if anyone has any ideas on what it could be let me know please- Julius

I wrote it in the Carb Guide, but some things need a lot of repeating. When you don't know the source of the grief, the rule is this: IGNITION FIRST.

^Right. The ignition components include the things that can take a fast nose dive. Not so the carbs, with the exception of cheap rubber tips on float needles...
