need help! new to bikes and learning as i go. got a few issues.

First off im glad to be on this forum and im new to these deals as well! lol but i wanted a bobber old school bike so i bought a 1978 yamaha xs650 ill have pics soon, and it ran just not good. i know a bit about mechanics, but first off i knew it ran too rich so i rebuilt the carbs and its better, now the starter is making a crazy slipping sound and catches sometimes and starts but it doesnt sound good. ive pulled the starter gear that has the spring and clip on it, where can i find a new on of those and does that usually fix it?
