I got a new sump pan gasket, scrapped off the old one, reinstalled...and now it leaks far worse than it did with the old gasket.

What gives?

Maybe the sump plate is warped. Take it off the engine remove the drain plug and filter. Use a straight edge and feeler gauges to check if it's flat. Better yet a thick piece of plate glass. Like a heavy mirror.
Place the plate on the glass and use feeler gauges to check. If warped a bit glue a piece of sand paper to the glass and rub the plate in figure 8's on the sand paper till level.
Start with say 200 then when level use 400 then 600 to get the surface fairly smooth.
Then use the leveled sump plate to check the case. If the cae is a bit off level then it's probably not cleaned off well A small bit of old gasket in a corner or some hard to see spot can cause mucho problemo's.
On thr gasket I use Anti seize as a sealer. It seals the gasket and makes it easy to remove without damage.
One more thing, check around the bolt holes in the case. if some one got a bit hevy handed the bolts can pull out the threads a bit and a ridge of metal can build up around the hole. This ridge will keep the plate from seating flush to the case.
On installation the bolts only need about 7 ft/lbs of torque. Done in stages to prevent warping the plate or stripping holes and breaking bolts.
