Oil smells of Fuel !!??

Hi all...Have been busy tearing down the bike bagging and tagging. Got the powder coating done and it looks great. Before that took the engine out after draining the oil which I noticed had a strong smell of fuel Im sure this cant be a good thing but not sure what it means Has any one got any clues and advice as to how I should proceed I have an 75 XS650B with 4600 miles on the clock and told it had stood for a long while. I started the bike up before the tear down and although unbalanced and untuned sounded pretty steady and strong. Thanks guys !

Check your floats and float needle. Also check your petcock and make sure they are good and not leaking...

Hi, thanks for the reply eric. Would that make the oil smell of gas ?

Yes, there are only 2 ways for gas to get into the oil....Well, 3. The third if you put the gas in....

Eric is spot on. I just ran into this problem because I let my XS sit with a flat rear tire causing the floats to be unlevel. You should be prepared to replace your output shaft seal and clutch pushrod seal as a bare minimum. Fuel is not kind to plastic and rubber.

Thanks for the help guys it doesnt sound as bad as I thought !! which is a bonus after the amount of cash I had agreed to pay to get my chroming done (I felt mugged!!)
