I have been fighting charging issues for awhile now, mostly the old regulator on my bike. Finally picked up a PMA, so that issue should be solved.

However, the other night I took the bike out for a quick clear of the pipes and it was running like crap with a full battery. Bogging after half throttle.

I checked the timing, and it was advanced wayyyyy too far. Fine at idle, but swinging right past the advance mark. I set it a month ago, locked the valves in perfectly, and tightened the cam chain.

What happened?

Is the ATU new? If not search for Retiregentleman post on peening(spreading) the part of the weight that sits in the notch. I can't remember the measurements for sure...........

It's not a new ATU, but it was recently working fine, holding advance right at the mark.

Should I peen the weights or just adjust the spring tension?

Well I dunno. Retiredgentleman gave a base measurement to check but tighter springs may do it.
