please help!!

i have a 77 xs650 it ran ok a month ago (was hard to start but after it warmed up it ran better) now i can get it started cleaned the points,checked the valve clearances,swapped carbs off a running bike, the bike will only run for a few seconds on starting fluid so i re wire the coils and point with a jump wire from battery (same as a simple wiringing diagram online which i have done about 20 bikes like that) and still it only runs for a second on starting fluid however both pipes get hot any help would be much apreciated!! thanks brett

If it starts, then stops, sounds like a fuel issue. How's your carbs?

that was my 1st guess the carbs came off of a running bike

Yeah I would start there. A good clean out to start with, then check out the carb guide in the tech section - invaluable! Things like mixture , idle and balance, combined with blockages etc make a huge difference
