Old story, new thread. The kickstarter does not clear the rearset pegs. There are some older threads on this topic too:

but I thought this was different enough for a new one.

Anyway, I have the old school speed rearsets but did not want to heat and bend a kickstarter as I don't have the equipment and space to do this safely. A local welder quoted me about $100 and I wasn't convinced it would be done well.

So I decided to try this without heating and bending anything. I got the RD400E kickstarter from yambits http://yambits.co.uk/rd400e-kickstart-lever-p-4986.html which is a nice piece. Unfortunately it does not clear the toe peg.

Luckily there is a folding toe peg from Woodcraft that is only ~$20 and very high quality, as you'd expect. http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/woodcraft-folding-toe-piece

These toe-pegs are spring-loaded so pull the circlip and remove the spring. Now it will fold out of the way of the kickstarter with one flip of the toe, but is solid for riding. Installation on the rearset lever is a cinch.

Unfortunately, if the kickstarter is fully seated it will still hit the toe peg even when its folded. However, if the kickstart is mounted just a bit further out it clears OK. Some might think this isn't good, but actually in this position the kickstart is still secure, starts the bike fine and doesn't hit the folded peg.

My other recommendation is to modify the brake lever off an xs750, which is straight and not curved. This looks nicer, and now in theory one could change out the spacers behind the rearset mount, slide the brakeside rearset closer to the bike frame, and seat the kickstarter further on the shaft.

Happy trails:)

This couldn't have been posted at a better time! I am going to attempt mounting a set of Old School Speed "mid" controls on my XS. Gonna be tricky! First thing to do is hunt down an XS750 rear brake lever! Thanks for the great tips!

I think the mids have fewer issues with kickstart clearance, so you should be good there. But yes, the xs750 and rd400 brake pedals should work if you need to modify one, and look much better imho.

Best of luck

I had a similar issue on my Cafe Racer build. I cut a V in the original kickstart, bent it forward and re-welded it. Sent it for chrome and had no problems
