Probably old hat to many here but here is a problem and a fix.
The starter motor on the engine we are using in our sidecar developed a short. The symptom was just the solenoid clicking like a flat battery. Tested the starter was faulty by jumping a battery direct to the starter, huge current draw but no action.
Pulled the starter out and found a long assembly screw had shorted against the field winding. Black arrow in photo. It was also showing signs of abrasion on the other side.
Fixed it with some insulating spray and some liquid tape. For good measure put some heatshrink on the screws as well. Not sure how long the repair last but it will be the first place to look if it gives trouble in the future.
