small fart from gas (bike pops without me trying to start it)

This was really weird.

This morning before work while i was letting my dog out, I went over to my XS, which doesn't run yet.
Yesterday I was able to get it to fire briefly once or twice and then no more.

So this a.m. I get on the bike, turn key on and "blaaatttttttt!" - on its own, without me doing anything to try and start it, the bike makes this fairly loud "pop", without kicking it over or even touching kicker or anything, and starter is not hooked up.

So my guess would be that there remained some unburned fuel from yesterday in one of the combustion chambers, and when I keyed on, a spark was emitted? I didn't think the coil would deliver a spark without the engine turning?

anyway, strange, huh?

turning the key is just like opening a set of points, it can and does pulse the coil(s)
