Starter delete.

Have a 82xs650. got the starter out found that i had a bad spring and that was the horrible noise i was hearing when trying to first start the bike after i picked it up. now have the #4 gear out from behind clutch and starter gears are gone, except wht is in the case, my question is the gear that is visible in now empty space connected to the smaller gear on opposite side(held in by Phillips,that i have read needs to stay in place) still has lots of play. do i need to split case and remove completely or am i being over cautious and it really okay?

You can leave it. The only reason I can think of to take it out would to lighten the bike up by a pound. I've done this on two engines.

BTW: I live about 20 miles east of Grand Rapids
