So I got the starter out. Applying power to it manually and it does not spin.

Trying to get it to turn with pliers did not work either.

So.... looks frozen.

Take apart and fix? Or just buy a used one?

May just do a delete, but trying to get a bike running again when I have to kick it cold does not sound like a great plan...

Might end up limping with one leg bigger than the other!

Fix or replace? If it comes apart fairly easy, your ahead the game because almost no waiting. Maybe some new bushes while its apart and the commutater turned, new grease where needed and it should last along time. While a used one from ebay or where ever, who knows what shape it is in.

Yeah, nothing to lose to take it apart and look.

But the shaft should turn by hand/pliers, yes?

It should but if its frozen up there is no way to know whats causing it to bind and not turn without taking it apart. They are fairly simple to take apart. Bust it open, but keep the washers and parts in order as they come out. New brushes and a good cleaning, and you should be good to go.

Took it apart, found the fixed windings are corroded all to hell.

It's toast. Got a freeze plug to put in the hole and going kick only for now, may reverse that if I can't get it kicking.

It was coughing and backfiring when kicked before, so I think it will start once I get the new points in.
