So i just bought a 78 xs650, The engine was off of it and the bike had a tci box, now i thought the tci box was only from the 80's on up. I dont really want a tci box, i was going to run a pamco highout put ignition system for it, and does that replace the tci box even though i though that 80 on up had them. Thanks

yup you can go without the TCI and yes it was only stock from 80 to the end of production.

another quick question, now they guy i bought the bike off of said it was a 78, now when you take of the side covers on the top of the engine where the breaker points would be there is nothing there, now shouldnt mine have those?

Just because the frame is one year doesn't mean the motor is from the same year, or hasn't been modified from original, I learned that with the first XS650 I bought,LOL. Look on the front of the engine for the serial number, and go to the tech section of the forum, the ID thread at the bottom of the page, to see what year the engine matches up to.
