Very cool bit of instruction there, Joel. You make it look easy. :D

I like the way you essentially used the bike as a mold for your seat design. Guaranteed to fit right that way.

The finished seat, before upholstering, caused me to think that guys who are into a sort of steampunk look might not want to take it any further -- just a bit of padding on the bottom.

Who did you use for your upholstery work? They did a nice job.
 
Nice info on how to build a cafe seat but why isn't there more cafe seats available for this bike. There are any number of seats out there for a CB 750 but they tend to be a little wide for our XS. I have scoured ebay for a seat that might fit but most seem too wide. I am runnings a hot wings (already upholstered) seat right now but not really crazy about it. I have seen cafe seats available for bikes that were never as popular as the XS 650.

yeah all the ones i saw i was not very impressed , plus they seamed over priced.
the plus for making your own is it will fit perfectly for your bike.
im planning with mine to put some storage in the empty cavity. but i have yet to figure it out yet
