I have had this 81 xs for a few years now and it is a good hard runner but is has always had some noise coming from the top side (sounds like chain noise). I have tried to adjusted the chain tensioner to no avail. The bike also has always had a very high intensity vibration to it. I have checked and replaced many suspension components but have had no luck. Am wondering if the vibration is coming from the engine.

Your going to hear some clatter. With all the moving parts it can't be avoided. As for the vibration that's the xs curse!
